Myth 1. AI possesses consciousness and thinks like humans
Reality. This is the most persistent and arguably the most dangerous myth. In fact, modern AI is not a digital mind, but complex statistical models capable of predicting and generating sequences of symbols with great accuracy. AI does not understand the meaning of what it generates; for example, neural networks select words that are most likely to satisfy the user. The task of GPT is to say something plausible, but not necessarily truthful. This is not consciousness, but a very advanced intellectual tool. We tend to anthropomorphize it, while it has neither emotions nor personal experience.
Myth 2. AI is always impartial and objective
Reality. This idea is incorrect. AI is trained on datasets created by humans. Any social, cultural, or historical bias embedded in these data will not only be reproduced by the neural network but also amplified. There are many examples where facial recognition algorithms have made mistakes for people of certain skin colors, and recruiting neural networks have subconsciously discriminated against candidates based on gender. AI is a mirror that can distort and exaggerate the flaws of the source it reflects.

Myth 3. AI will soon replace humans and destroy jobs
Reality. Mass unemployment due to AI has not yet occurred. Most experts agree that AI will take over the performance of specific tasks (task-level automation), rather than entire professions. Nvidia CEO J. Huang distinguishes between a task and a role: automating the former should not lead to the disappearance of the latter. According to some studies, only about 5% of professions may be fully automated. AI is more likely to free up time for creative tasks than to leave people unemployed.
Myth 4. AI is something new, complex, and very expensive
Reality. This is incorrect for three reasons:
- AI is not new: the term was coined in the 1950s, and in 1959 there was a program for playing checkers. Many methods have existed for decades.
- AI is not complex: today it is enough to describe a task in natural language—no special knowledge is required.
- AI is not expensive: there are budget and even free services, many popular neural networks operate on a freemium model, and their computing power has become cheaper.
Myth 5. AI is uncontrollable and will inevitably enslave humanity
Reality. This scenario is popular in science fiction, but modern AI does not possess will, desires, or goals. AI has no psyche, and therefore has no basic needs, such as the desire to possess or conquer. It is a tool that operates within the constraints and algorithms set by humans.
Whether to believe in these myths is a personal choice for everyone. But one fact remains indisputable: modern AI is a tool technology with its strengths and weaknesses. The main thing to remember is that its key feature is not rationality or objectivity, but the ability to be a useful assistant to humans, taking on increasingly complex tasks.
